Atmosphere affects sound, too. Like light, sound travels in waves, and when those sound waves reach our ears, we hear something, because the sound waves have vibrated the molecules in Earth’s atmosphere. However, if there’s no atmosphere to carry a sound wave, there won’t be any sound to hear. Since the moon has almost no atmosphere, it’s a quiet place indeed. When the Apollo 11 astronauts hammered the pole bearing the American flag into the moon’s surface, the hammering was silent. When they walked across the moon’s surface, their steps were silent too. You may wonder how the astronauts communicated with each other and Mission Control under those circumstances. Well, atmosphere is air, and there was just enough air inside their space helmets to allow sound waves to form. So they were able to use the radios built into their helmets to communicate with each other and with Mission Control back on Earth.
