Lost

Bert phones:

“Toby’s gone,

missing for two days now,

ever since the big snowstorm.”

We suit up and crunch out to search

where he hunts, sleeps

and hides from harm.

We keep our eyes peeled

for cat tracks, for fur,

for any signs of cat fight or hurt.

Often we play detective

with magnifying glasses,

flashlights, all ears alert.

But this time it’s for real.

Eyeballing everywhere,

we turn up nothing,

NOTHING at all.

We crane necks up, up

and both shout,

“The warehouse ROOF!”

We know its ins and outs

since we sometimes play there,

though we’re not supposed to.

It’s Bert’s Big Freezer cold.
