Chapter Twenty-Eight
âJaime, look out!â I yelled as the zombie yanked on my arm.
The zombie was an old woman, and she was salivating at the mouth. I jerked my arm free. Buck came up and slammed his gun into the back of her head.
âSorry, June,â he said to the zombie on the floor.
He had knocked her out. My arm was slimy where June had grabbed me. So stupid of me to get distracted by Jaime again and almost get myself killed. I would tell him when we got back to the cabin, whatever this was between us was over.
âViolet, are you okay?â Jaime rushed to my side.
âDid she bite you?â Buck asked with his hand on his gun.
âNo, no. She didn't bite me, she just grabbed me, but she would have if you hadn't come over.â I choked out as fast as I could before Buck shot me.
I grabbed a slide wiping the slime on one, and then a paper towel, wiping my arm clean.
âGood. I heard you talking. Can you really do something with these things if you researched them?â Buck asked.
âI think so,â I answered.
âOkay. Letâs get her on the table and strap her down. You get your samples, and then we get the hell outta dodge,â Buck ordered.
Buck shocked me more than anyone I had ever known. He was intelligent under the gruff exterior and quiet ways. We hefted June onto a bed and tied her down with gauze. The wound on her head was seeping ooze. I grabbed gloves, and vials. I swabbed as much of her skin and ooze as I could, and placed them in the vials. I was not sure where to stick her for blood or whatever ran through her veins now. I opted for a direct approach and stabbed her arm. June woke up with a gurgle, scaring the shit out of all of us. We all jumped back. Buck was the first to recover, and he smashed her head again, knocking her out. I cautiously reached for the needle sticking out of June. I pulled on where the syringe was in her arm, and dark blood came out that turned white. I finished and stuffed them in my bag with the rest of the supplies I had gathered.
âWhat do we do with her?â I gestured to June.
âIâll take care of it,â Buck said.
Buck reached over to the next bed and picked up a pillow, placing it on Juneâs head. I turned away because I knew what was coming next. A small pop echoed out in the room. June was dead.
We made quick work of finding any supplies we might need left in the clinic. I was in front when we made our way back to the waiting area. I stopped dead in my tracks, and Jaime bumped into me.
âWhatâs up?â he whispered.
âShhh,â I tried to reply as quietly as I could.
There were two zombies outside the clinic window. Different ones from the two we had seen on the road when we came into the clinic.
