THE MŪL MANTRA—INNER TRUTH

ek ong kār, satinām, karatā purakh,

nirbha-u, nirvair, akāl mūrat, ajūnī, saibhang,

gur prasād, jap!

ād sach, jugād sach, hai bhī sach, nānak hosī bhī sach.

God is One, Truth is God’s Name, God is the Doer, without fear or vengeance,

Undying Form, Unborn, Self-illumined, Gurū’s gift, repeat! True in the

beginning, true through the ages, true even now, oh Nānak, God is forever true.8

ek: one; the One vibration within all of us

ong: manifested vibration of the Divine; the creative sound current from which all Creation arises

kār: to do, to make; that which does, makes, or creates

satinām: Truth is God’s Name, truth I am (sat: the vibration of truth; nām: the Name of God that vibrates through all beings and is what creates us; nām is a noun, that creative vibration that is within; “I am, I am” is the essence of nām)

karatā purakh: God is the Doer (karatā: the doer; purakh: the Being)

nirbha-u: without fear

nirvair: without revenge

akāl mūrat: Undying Form (akāl: undying; mūrat: image)

ajūnī: not going through the womb; not subject to birth and death

saibhang: Self-illumined

gur prasād: Gurū’s gift

jap: repeat

ād sach: true in the primal beginning (ād: primal; sach: truth)

jugād sach: true through the ages (jugād: through the ages; sach: truth)

hai bhī sach: true even in this moment (hai: he, she, it is; bhī: even)

nānak hosī bhī sach: Nānak it shall ever be true (nānak: never say no, says Nānak; the energy of Nānak goes into Universal consciousness where we do not resist reality; hosī: it shall be; bhī: even; sach: truth)

The Third Mantra, the Mūl Mantra, connects you to the Infinite Truth beyond questions and boundaries. With boundless energy, this Mantra corrects misleading thoughts and ideas; without your realizing it, this Mantra works to align you with truth. You simply vibrate with its eternal truth and relax; doing so, you can discriminate between reality and falsehood. After his Jal Samādhi, or merger with the One in the water, Gurū Nānak immediately taught the Mūl Mantra—the first part of Jap Jī. I think it’s a phenomenal blessing that we can practice this Mantra every day!

I recommend connecting to the Mūl Mantra by taking the meaning of the words and applying them to your life. Allow “ek ong kār” to bring you into the awareness that God, who is One, exists within all beings (including you, of course, but also all those who regularly provide you with challenges). Consider the following:

satinām: Truth is God’s Name. The yogīs, saints, and sages tell us that all creation emanates from the vibration of God’s Name. So as God’s Name vibrates, we come into existence; the sound creates the noun—the “I am,” the “nām.” When we chant “satinām,” we are really chanting “Truth I am,” or “Truth is my identity.” We affirm that truth prevails. Tap into your inner truth—know it, live by it, and be it.

karatā purakh: God is the Doer. When you understand this, life becomes God’s dance, God’s grace, God’s doing. Knowing this, you can relax. Yogi Bhajan used to joke that in life we simply need a tasty bag of popcorn and a Coke; then we can just sit back and enjoy the show.
