Begin by setting up folders by category in “My Pictures,” according to how you’d like to group your photos—e.g., “Friends—School,” “Friends—Camp,” “Family,” “Vacations,” “Pets,” “Art.”

Open each photo, delete the bad shots, name the photos you are keeping with recognizable titles, and then move them to the appropriate folder. Working one to two hours at a time, you can get a large number of on-line photos under control before you know it. If your photos come from the developer’s or your camera on rewritable CDs or disk, be sure to store and label the disks to match your computer system. A computer crash would eliminate all your photos in an instant, so keeping the backup on disk is advisable.
