Chapter 30

“Vicky found the gown, left me alone in a dressing room. The first thing I noticed was the large mirror in front of me, a large oval shaped floor to ceiling mirror. I could feel the heat from bright lights that surrounded the top of it. I could see myself quite clearly. I stared in the mirror for a moment. I didn't look like myself. I saw a pimple and a scar on my face. Funny. I thought, examining my face, I never knew the marks were there. And my hair color – not as shiny when I saw it in the mirror at home.

Vicky was right. The gown was beautiful. It even had a sweep train. The color was wrong though. The color was champagne. I slipped into the gown, opened the door. Vicky and Ava were waiting to see how I looked. Their eyes were on me immediately.

“What took you so long?” Ava asked.

“I'll tell you about it later. Right now can someone please zip it?” I asked.

“Avery, you look gorgeous,” Ava said.

“You sure do. Now I know the color is all wrong dear. But don't worry about that. I can take care of the color. I can order a white gown for you,.” And I know. This gown has a train. How do you like the train?” Vicky asked as she zipped the dress.

“I kinda like the train,” I replied. “What do you think about the train, Ava?”

Ava studied the gown. She looked at the train and said, “It's a nice touch.” Then Ava looked at the front of the dress and each side. She noticed the price. This dress costs $1099.00.”

“That's right,” Vicky said.

“Is this a good price for your budget?” Ava's eyes moved from the price. She stared at me.

“And don't forget you might want to buy a veil, shoes, and a slip. So you may have to consider other purchases.” Vicky added.

“It's a lot to think about,” I studied the price tag. “Then I thought about how I looked under the lighting in the dressing room mirror.

“It certainly is,” Vicky said. “Would you like to try another dress.”

I thought about the condition of my body again. I thought about how much the dress cost. Then I thought about the gown I really wanted. The size 14 mermaid style gown in the other section of the store. Vicky must have known something wasn't quite right.

Vicky asked, “Or would you like to give it some thought?”

That was the best question I'd heard all day. “Yes, Vicky. I would like to think about all of this.”

“Do then. Please do. Purchasing a wedding gown is a big decision. So think about it. Take as long as you need. Would you like me to help you out of the gown?” Vicky asked. She unzipped the gown.

“It's okay. I can manage.” I returned to the dressing room.

Searching for a wedding dress had been overwhelming. I really did have a lot to think about. I never imagined preparing for my wedding would be so hard.
