BATTLEFIELD ROLES
The previous chapter detailed many different types of orc troops. Few hordes feature them all. Orc tactics are built around battlefield roles, and these can be filled by different troop types depending on what a warlord has available. The primary tactical roles are:
Reconnaissance: This role is usually performed by scouts and wolf archers. If they are not available, skirmishers can take it on. They are the eyes and ears of the horde.
Pinning: Many orc tactics revolve around pinning an enemy in place once they are discovered. The job of the pinning troops is to prevent the enemy from slipping away while the rest of the horde moves up. Skirmishers take on this role in nearly every horde. Light chariots are also used for pinning.
Breakthrough: Every warlord needs a force that can punch through the enemy battle line. Ironbacks, heavy chariots, wolf spearmen, Flesh Eaters, and trolls are all shock troops that can break nearly any enemy if employed correctly.
Follow-up: Once a breakthrough is achieved, there is still hard fighting to do. This is the classic role of the warrior infantry. They plunge into the hole created by the breakthrough, and widen and expand it.
Exploitation: When the enemy breaks and begins to flee, fast-moving troops are needed to follow and attack them. This not only kills more of the enemy, but also makes sure they keep running. Wolf archers and wolf spearmen (if not previously deployed) most commonly take on this role. Light chariots are also sometimes used. If none of these are available, it falls on the warrior infantry to finish the job.
Support: Throughout the battle, missile fire can provide support for both offensive and defensive moves. Formed units of archers, often goblins, are the most common support troops. Ballistas are excellent support when available.
Again, hordes donât necessarily have access to all the troop types they need. Often warlords must make do with what they have, or give troops different roles at different times in the battle. Since warrior infantry outnumbers all the other troop types by far, it is often they who are called upon to do what must be done when other troops are not available.
