CHAPTER NINE

KILLIAN

I’d put up a good front for my Savage, but Sol and I exchanged a look as we left camp that told me he wasn’t any too keen on the current plan, either.

Only Lata was excited, trotting ahead like a goddamn puppy out for a stroll. For now, I was keeping us all invisible and practicing using my air magic to blow away any hint of lion or fae.

I knew I could match Carlyle’s visuals with my glamor - it was the scent I was worried about. It would take some serious fucking concentration to use both my glamor and my air magic to keep her smelling like Carlyle in the close jungle heat, and not a wet kitty. If the jaguars started to surround us, the air would have nowhere to go.

Our girl had looked miserable, though. In my mind, there was really no choice. This whole trip to the jungle had been Lata’s idea, anyways, so it was admirable that she was taking responsibility for the shit we were in.

I’d hoped that would make me feel better about what the risks we were taking, but I still felt like an asshole for taking advantage of Sol’s kid sister like this.

“If shit gets bad in here, get her out first,” Sol told me, his voice a low growl. I nodded - it was a given.

The jungle loomed dark ahead of us, even though it was now broad daylight. I wished we knew more about these rogue jaguars - just what kind of magic did they have access to? Unfortunately, Lata’s source had been a bit vague on that.

As we got closer, I stopped glamoring us invisible and began to weave the disguise around Lata, hearing Sol curse under his breath.

“That’s fucking weird,” he muttered, and I chuckled.

“Jus’ keep reminding your dick that’s your sister, lion,” I warned. He gave me a dark look, and if we weren’t about to enter enemy territory, I would have paid for my comment with a tussle.

I didn’t bother to glamor myself since the twins had scented me out before anyway. I needed to keep all my power focused on maintaining Lata’s cover.

Lata reached the very edge of the rain forest, turning back to look at us. “This has to stay civil,” she reminded us. “I doubt you can glamor me up any of her magic.”

That was the damn truth. We needed to be actors today, not fighters.

I saw Lata take a deep breath and square her shoulders. A fuck-all attitude I couldn’t fake with glamor spread across her face, and I wondered how much she’d studied Carlyle to make the change so convincing.

She sauntered into the wild growth of the jungle, and Sol and I hurried to flank her as best we could along the narrow path.

“How do ya plan to find them?” I asked, scanning the area.

“Oh, they’re here, all around us,” Sol said under his breath. “Nobody sneaks into a big cat’s territory.”

I upped my air magic to take extra care with Lata’s scent, directing any leftover lion smell toward Sol.
