THE MUSES

The Muses were the Greek goddesses who presided over the arts, especially fine arts, and sciences, including geography and mathematics. They were believed to inspire all artists, especially poets, philosophers, and musicians. Many authors invoked the Muses at the start of their work, calling for help or inspiration. As Homer did in the Iliad and the Odyssey, poets and musicians invited the Muses to sing through them. They presided over performed metrical speech, mousikē, which is where we get the English word music. The Muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory). Typically, there is mention of nine muses: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania.
