CONTINGENT LIVES, CONTINGENT CAREERSâStarting over in new fields meant some course-changing women were vulnerable to another source of job insecurity and turbulence. As we have seen, it was common for women to gravitate toward fields like teaching that were substantially lower paid than their former professions (albeit perceived as more meaningful and authentic). Unfortunately, such low-earning careers were particularly prone to being upended by an unexpected but sharp drop in family income. Denise Hortas loved her relaunch career as a full-time middle school science teacher, though she was earning a mere fraction of her former salary. However, when her husband, a corporate lawyer, decided to retire, Denise heeded his request to shore up the family income by returning to her lucrative former career. A similar dynamic occurred for Nathalie Everett, who eventually migrated out of her relaunch job as a high school language teacher and into the corporate world of textbook marketing. This abrupt switch to a more lucrative occupation was spurred in part by the precarity of her husbandâs employment during the recession. Thus the types of jobsâlower paidâthat women were drawn to upon relaunch tended to reinforce the ongoing contingency of their careers on family demands, and in this case husbandsâ careers.
