Quinn and Hayley Foxworth reminded Parker of Ray and Laura, and that was the highest compliment he could pay any marriage. The way they looked at each other, the way they couldn’t pass each other without some kind of physical contact, and especially the way they seemed to communicate without speaking.

Like now, when they looked at their dog, then each other, and grinned. Not just smiled, like two people with a dog they loved, but grinned. Almost in proud amazement. The dog was clever, and that he had a mind of his own was clear even to Parker, but there seemed to be more to it than that.

Or maybe he’d just been imagining that look of utter disgust the dog had given him when he’d arrived. Almost as if he knew that after he’d left them last night, Parker had done something stupid and needed to apologize.

Parker was laughing inwardly at his own silliness when, in a near duplication of his actions last night, Cutter adeptly maneuvered him into sitting next to Carly. And his body woke up to her closeness, clearly remembering the delightful activity that had been so rudely interrupted by the knock on the door.

He looked at her. “I didn’t mean to—”

“I know,” she said, with a wry look at the dog. “We’ll talk about that later.”

He felt cheered at the thought that she wanted to talk to him later and settled in on the couch.

“All yours, Carly,” Quinn said.

Parker blinked. She’d called this meeting? When Quinn had called this morning, he’d only said there was a development, so after dropping Woof off to visit Ray—who had thankfully progressed to where he was allowed to be out with his dog in the courtyard alone as long as he held to his promise not to try throwing a ball for him—he’d headed here. Ray had been happy that they hadn’t given up, and Parker, perhaps foolishly, had promised he wouldn’t until they at least found an explanation of what Ray had seen.

It wasn’t like he had anything better to do anyway, just now.

“I got a call back this morning from Turner’s ex-wife,” she said. He remembered that she’d called and had to leave a message, which she hadn’t been happy about. “She’d just heard my message. And she was not happy.”

“Didn’t like getting a call from the sheriff?” he asked. “Must have been a fine way to start her Sunday morning.”

“That wasn’t what she was upset about,” Carly said, turning to look at him then. “Her son had been living with her there in San Francisco, but got into trouble. Just as you thought, it wasn’t the place for a kid with a drug problem.”

“Had been?” he asked.

She nodded. “She sent him to live here with his father, in the hopes he could get his life back on track.”

Parker blinked. “But his father said...”

“Exactly.”

He let out a breath. Suddenly this had all become much more real. “He was lying.”
