[Back] and Farrington did the decoding together, and we listened with bated breath as they read out the results of it to us: ‘An advanced southerly base under Marr will be established,’ they read, ‘at Peter I Island, to which will be attached Lamb, Ashton, Berry, Davies, Farrington, Back’ … Ashton almost overturned the table in his eagerness to examine the maps on the wall of the mess room in an effort to discover the locality of Peter I Island, and he was followed by all the others, knee deep in overturned chairs. ‘Good Lord,’ he cried, ‘the bloody island’s almost off the map!’ And indeed it was, almost a thousand miles to the south west of Port Lockroy, hundreds of miles from any known coasts, and a blank space on the map to the south. Peter I Island stood out on the map, isolated and alone, and they all stood staring at this ominous solitude, babbling excitedly to each other. The consternation that ensued for the next few moments was almost mutinous!39
