As the winter sun set, he stood at the barred window, looking across the patio at seagulls flying around ‘shitting on the concrete’, and remembered that he’d somehow always known this was where he’d end up. All those times he’d stood on his bedroom balcony, looking at his mum’s beautiful garden and the glimpse of azure ocean, he’d wondered when he’d be looking through bars. But he’d always just shut down his thoughts and go. Now, invading his reminiscences of the world outside, was the bang, bang, bang of the cell doors being systematically slammed shut for the night.

I felt really sad at night when I was by myself, thinking about everyone back home and I was in this tiny little room with those bars and I would look . . . and say, ‘Remember, remember your window – you knew, you knew – you knew it – and here you are.’ My life had fallen apart. My mum was pissed, my brothers and sisters were so pissed. I was feeling so alone – I didn’t have anything because my money had finished. I was 10,000 kilometres from home, I was lost and locked and a few tears rolled out.
