Chapter 22

Kayley spotted Cutter racing around the corner of the building the moment she cleared the trees. By the time she pulled the car to a halt and shut it off, he was there, dancing outside the driver’s door as if he’d been waiting his whole life for her to arrive. It made her smile, and she was still smiling as she got out to greet the happy dog. And amused when he circled behind her and nudged her. Gently, but definitely. She took a step, and Cutter darted out in front of her. He looked back, went a few more steps, looked back again.

He did the whole Lassie thing when you got here...

The memory of Trip’s words made her smile all over again, and she willingly followed the dog around the corner of the building.

It had taken a great deal of restraint not to show up here at Foxworth the first thing this morning. She’d had trouble concentrating on her usual Saturday morning chores, which consisted of both contacts with clients who were looking for a better position and couldn’t reach out from their current workplaces, and plain and simple housework. She kept thinking about Trip, and wondering how he was doing at Foxworth, if he and Rafe were getting along okay, and if he’d even want to see her there again today.

She wished he had a phone she could call him on. She could call Foxworth, but that would make it...official, sort of. Also, she wanted to ask personal questions, like how he was feeling, did he need anything, want anything...

Like you?

She had bitten her lip until the pain distracted her. And decided then and there that she was going. If he didn’t want to see her, then she’d just leave. She’d decided to combine it with a trip to the market in town, so it wouldn’t be a fruitless effort no matter what.

I was in the neighborhood sounded a lot better than I couldn’t wait to see you again.

But somehow, now that she was here, now that she’d seen Cutter so clearly happy, almost jaunty, and now that she’d petted him and gotten that feeling she always got from the animal, she knew it would be all right.

“You’re a miracle on paws, dog,” she murmured as he disappeared around the next corner, to the back side of the big green building. She followed, and the moment she cleared the corner stopped dead.

Trip was here, all right. Clearly working, and just as clearly working hard. She noticed—barely—the jacket he’d shed tossed on the flagstones of the patio. He was in those cheap running shoes and jeans, which had both gathered some mud. And a T-shirt that was damp enough with sweat to cling to his broad shoulders and flat belly and set off ideas she was trying to avoid. It wasn’t at all warm today, barely breaking sixty, but the sky was clear for a change, and she could see why he’d taken off the jacket, as hard as he was obviously working in direct sunlight at high noon.
