In those days conquering armies lived by occupying the homes and eating the food of the conquered. Toussaint knew his people could survive off the land better than Europeans could, for it was their home. The French soldiers would have a difficult time managing without cities and towns and farms to feed and house them. So Toussaint, Dessalines, and Christophe made plans for the island's defense.
