Tuna cringed at the last sound and turned to Herby. “You told me you fixed it!”

“I did,” Herby thought.

The good news was the beam worked exactly like it was supposed to. They could hear Herby’s thoughts perfectly. The bad news was . . . well, Tuna was about to find out.

“But,” Tuna argued, “that last sound it made—it’s just like the Morphing Blade.” His face filled with fear. “Don’t tell me you fixed the Thought Broadcaster Pen with parts from the Morphing Blade!”

“All right.”

“Did you?”

“I can’t tell you,” Herby thought.

“Why not?”

“You just told me not to.”

Tuna began to pace. “I can’t believe it! You can be so mindless, sometimes!”

“Hey, who you calling mindless?”

“You, you birdbrain!”

“Listen, dude, if anybody’s a birdbrain around here, it’s you!”
