“If You Had My Love”—Jennifer Lopez

(Rick Dee’s Weekly Top 40)

Lennox North

I find Scarlet curled in a ball on the ground, her jeans lying discarded nearby, her sexy underwear still inside them. She’s soaked and shivering, her bare skin awash in goosebumps.

“Scarlet!”

I drop to my knees beside her, lifting her body into my arms. She’s so limp she feels dead, and my heart stops for a second before her eyes blink open.

Her tongue darts out to wet her lips, tasting the raindrops trickling down them, like every inch of her face. “Lennox?” she whispers hoarsely.

“I’m here.”

“I called for you,” she says, seeming to come more alive. “I called for you when they—when he—but you didn’t—”

Her voice breaks off in an ugly sob, and she throws her arms around my neck, burying her face in my jacket. Her whole body quakes violently against me, and I close my eyes and hold her close, cradling her head against my heart. Guilt falls like an anvil on my chest.

I shouldn’t have brought her here.

I should have protected her better.

I shouldn’t have believed her when she promised she’d be okay no matter what happened.

“I’m here now,” I murmur into her bedraggled, sandy hair. “It’s okay. You’re okay.”

She only shakes her head against me, clinging more tightly to my neck.

“We should get out of here,” I say gently, glancing back over my shoulder into the pounding rain. I pick up the flashlight I dropped, gather her up, and stand with her cradled in my arms.

“My jeans,” she mumbles.

I bend to grab them before starting down the slope between the rows of what must be old headstones, though I can’t imagine how this many people died on an island this small. But then, if this is where the Disciples bury their dead, it’s no wonder. Though the gang is smaller and more localized than the Hell’s Angels, I’ve heard similar stories.

Girls raped to death in broad daylight.

Women murdered at rest stops.

Men ripped limb from limb for a disrespectful look, their body parts scattered along the highway.

And I did a hell of a lot more than look at them wrong.

I boost Scarlet higher in my arms, holding her tighter, walking faster. I don’t dare use the flashlight. My boots slip on the wet grass as I reach the bottom of the gulley, which is rushing with a wide stream of water. I splash across and start up the other bank, thankful for the rain that helps obscure us from view if anyone comes looking.

“Where are we going?” Scarlet asks.

“Goodman left in the boat, but maybe he went around the island. Do you think you can swim out?”

She’s quiet a minute, and then she shakes her head against my chest. “I can’t swim.”

“Then I’ll tow you out,” I say. “We can’t stay here, Scar. I… I killed Lucero.”

That’s not all, but I can’t tell her the rest. I can already feel her weight growing heavier, the judgment in her silence.

“I’m bleeding,” she whispers at last.

“What?”

“I can’t go in the ocean, Lennox,” she says.
