Chapter Fifteen

Sam

I glared at my cat for the majority of the night. He laid in my bed next to me as I pet him. Once I forgave him, I realized he’d saved me from making a big mistake by kissing Oliver. That was a complication I didn’t need in my life. I didn’t want a man to have to take care of. I didn’t want the expectations that came with a relationship. I was happy by myself with my cat, my ridiculous cat.

“Thanks for having my back,” I told him as I scratched his neck and he purred. I tossed and turned most of the night as thoughts and dreams of Oliver’s lips plagued me.

I was an irritable mess the next morning by the time Maddie knocked on my door. “You look like you… didn’t sleep well.”

“I slept like shit.”

“Your non-date date went that bad, huh?” she asked as she took up the task of brewing coffee for us both.

“It was fine, I just didn’t sleep well, is all.” I refused to tell her exactly why I didn’t sleep well. She’d make it into part of her plot for Oliver and I’s imagined romance. The one that didn’t, nor would ever, exist.

“Would that happen to have anything to do with a hunky general contractor?” she questioned as she surveyed my face for any sort of slip up that would confirm her theory.

“No,” I responded flatly, but even I couldn’t hide the blush creeping up my neck. I could feel it prickling my skin and heating my cheeks as it climbed.

“Oh my God, it did. Tell me everything!”

“Maddie, nothing happened.” I willed the blush to go away as I thought of how his lips would have felt on mine and how I wished Mr. Meowgi hadn’t jumped on Oliver’s lap when he did - in the same moment I was grateful he had.

“Don’t you lie to me, Samantha. You tell me, and you tell me now.” Her gaze was hard as she waited for me to dish the whole story and not just my dismissal of it. She raised one brow at me as she crossed her arms as if to say, “So, go on. Tell me everything”.

“Alright, fine. So, we had a few beers and went for a walk on the beach. We talked and I told him about my time at that stupid firm. It was like he had some revelation and he apologized for how much of an ass he was when you first brought him to the bookstore. He apologized for that and for the other idiots who had harassed me. I know it’s stupid because it wasn’t his fault but hearing him say it almost made me cry. No one’s ever been so sincere about it before, besides you of course.” I told her everything, every thought I had while we walked back to the bookstore. How I’d asked him to come up, thinking I might let a kiss happen, but how Mr. Meowgi ensured it didn’t.
