Chapter 21

After dinner, we took care of the pets, then rushed out. This was the first time the bookstore had been a part of an ArtHop. To promote Mysteryfest, Clark obtained poster-sized book covers of the author’s latest books and set up a display in the reading area near the front door. Mo’s cover was larger and would be front and center, and he would be stationed at a table near the entrance to sign and sell books, chat with the customers, and encourage them to attend Mysteryfest.

When we arrived, quite a few people were milling about. Mo was with fans, so I went to find Clark. He was by the exhibit, which had turned out beautifully. There was coffee and cookies set out for the guests. Since Clark was busy, I wandered around the display and admired the stunning covers. I had to give Edward credit for finding such talented artists. An awful book cover could be a disaster for a book, especially for a new author who needed to catch the eye of potential readers.

I noticed Stephen with Lucas, so I walked over to join them. They were behind Mo’s table to get out of the way of people coming in.

Lucas gave me a one-armed hug. “Hey Sis, Stephen was telling me how the investigation was going. Or not going.”

I returned the hug, then stepped back. Stephen must have chosen not to tell Lucas about the secrets yet. “I don’t suppose you remembered anything that might be relevant?”

“Not really, sorry. I’m going to have to ditch out of here earlier than planned.” Lucas winked.

I was certain that meant he had a date. Lucas never had trouble finding a date, but he hadn’t been serious about anyone since my brother’s death. I wondered if he ever would be again.

“I did text the other media who were there and they didn’t notice anything of value either. I’ve also been working on background info on Marilyn and the other authors. Checked out all of their websites more thoroughly, but nothing we didn’t already know there. Been Googling them too, checking out other interviews and articles, but Edward must keep them all on a tight leash. Nothing interesting so far. More gossip than anything else.” His demeanor turned serious. “Speaking of gossip…” His brown eyes were filled with concern.

“I saw it and I’m fine.”

“I hope you know that is nonsense about your parents.”

A shiver ran down my spine remembering the horrible night when the police had come to tell us about the accident. “Is it though? Considering the family line of work.” I shook my head. “Doesn’t matter now anyway. Either way, they’re dead and have been for a long time.”

Stephen’s gray eyes darkened as well, no doubt thinking of his brother. “We’ll chat with Chloe in the morning, see if she knows anything.”

Lucas got that hungry reporter look I knew well. “Any chance I could tag along?”

He’d helped us uncover the person behind Tower Gossip and a murderer a few months ago.
