• Substitutes. Another category of relationships involves persons who consider themselves heterosexual but wind up in a samesex relationship. In some cases, this is because they can't find a partner of the other sex and fall into a same-sex relationship out of loneliness or similar reasons. In some cases, each partner comes to the relationship wounded, lonely, or lost; each sees the other as the only person who has ever cared for him. In other cases, a relationship can develop between persons in same-sex environments such as prisons, schools, all-male work environments, women left behind in communities from which the men have migrated, persons living in societies in which men and women are strictly segregated (in the past, harems), men who took up prostitution for financial reasons and became accustomed to it, women involved in prostitution who seek comfort from other women, persons who couple with transsexuals of the same biological sex, and persons with sexual fetishes and sexual addictions.

Such persons might consider themselves heterosexual, but find a same-sex relationship that meets their needs. For example, men involved in bodybuilding are attractive to some men with SSA because they have "ideal" male bodies. The bodybuilders, although they insist they're totally heterosexual, might become involved in a form of prostitution. Since sexual behavior can be addictive, the men, having been habituated to this behavior, might find it difficult to return to a relationship with a woman.161
