Act III

This May Be One We Can’t Solve

CHAPTER 29

Thursday, February 19

Nearly a month had passed since their meeting with Enrico Blanco.

The day after their meeting with Blanco, Sam charged Veronica with securing two additional managers and a dozen staff from Chicago as well as various Hamilton Pierce offices in the States. All SOP in launching a full-scale investigation. The time for negotiation was over.

Alicia had virtually no experience in running a forensic accounting investigation but was proving to be a decent manager. She was the translator-in-chief. All day long she would work with the staff to resolve their translation issues in working with the many documents now flooding in from other sources.

All of them worked at the hotel in the Pit, affectionally dubbed by one of the staff for the large hotel conference room. Most days they had little respite from the Pit, even eating their lunch at the conference table where they worked.

Each day was the same routine: several of them would first make a trip to the bank, along with their security detail, to copy documents, mostly deposits and debits, and then back at the hotel they’d methodically log in that document production, distributing them to the various sub-teams working on payments, vendor payables, other cash transactions, and loan activity. All this was in an effort to reconstruct Abello’s balance sheet and income statement in the absence of any real financial data. Sam had little contact with the staff but had to admit he didn’t fully appreciate the effort they were going through each and every day and the stress building by not finding any evidence of crimes—at least nothing that could stand up to cross-examination.

Aside from that effort, Sam and Veronica had been working twelve-hour days interviewing Abello employees ferried out to the hotel by security managed by Manuel and Fernando. Sam placed a lot of hope on the interview process. His past experiences had proven in most major financial crimes there was at least one person—one honest soul—who would surface at some point and lead him and his team to the motherlode of evidence that always seemed to bust the case wide open. That Aha moment! Then, Sam would solve it and explain to his client all the details: who were the fraudsters, how long did it go on, how much did they steal, how they pulled it off, and where the remaining loot was stashed. He’d be the hero, but he knew he could never have accomplished this without a whistleblower coming forward. All he needed to do was provide the environment for that to occur.

During each interview Sam would communicate a sense that he cared and wanted to catch the bad guys before they’d do more harm to the company and its employees. It had worked so often in the past…. Sam was frustrated it didn’t seem to be working this time, and he couldn’t figure out why that was.

Sam and Veronica had worked together often over the past eight years but never had they been more committed to the same goal as on Project Vista.
