Chapter 7
DAMON SUAREZ WAS kissing her.
Her.
This had to be a dream.
This must be a dream.
Any second now, she’d wake up. Any second now, she’d be jerked awake, her heart pounding, remnants of sleep still clinging to her skin. Any second now, she’d realize this was a figment of her imagination, a side effect of drinking one too many whiskey shots.
She needed to pinch herself.
Or . . .
Damon drew back. Slightly. He didn’t back away or let her go. If anything, one arm tightened around her waist, while his other slid up her back until his hand cupped the back of her head. His lips were a whisper of a breath away from hers. “You bit me.”
Well.
Not a dream then.
It should be though.
It really, really should be.
“You kissed me,” she said.
And saying it out loud somehow made it more real, which was ridiculous. Because how could anything be more real when his lips had just been on hers?
Damn it, why had she nibbled on his mouth? Why hadn’t she just let the dream continue and imprint the kiss into her memory?
Why, why, why did she not kiss him back?
Argh!
And where had all her convictions gone about staying away? So much for her so-called rules. Who cared about rules anyway? Highly overrated things, those.
“I did kiss you,” he said. His lips feathered over hers again. “And I just kissed you now.”
Someone jostled into them, making him tighten his grip even more. She was pressed against him, a stamp on an envelope. She didn’t even look to see who had done it—she didn’t even care—not when his brown eyes darkened, and his mouth pressed against hers once more.
“That was another kiss. And another.” His mouth trailed kisses over her lips. “And that was way too many kisses to count.”
The little kisses—the brief touch of mouth upon mouth—were teases, appetizers of what was to come. Jane wanted the main course, and she really, really wanted the dessert.
“And I’m going to kiss you again.” He did so, his lips sliding over hers, and she melted. “And again. And again. And again. But . . .”
He lifted his head.
She waited, her breath suspended, her arms locked around him—not wanting to let go.
“You could kiss me, too.” He lowered his head back to hers, and this time, it was he who nibbled on her bottom lip, like she was the sweetest morsel he’d ever tasted. “Or even kiss me back.”
Well, of course she could kiss him. And she was kissing him back—but maybe not the way he meant or wanted her to.
But kissing him meant something. Him kissing her could still be a hallucination, even though she couldn’t fool herself. But her kissing him? That meant she was doing away with everything she’d been telling herself not to do for the last two years.
That meant she couldn’t unkiss him.
But then again it wasn’t like she could wake up tomorrow and pretend this was a dream. Nor did she want to do that.
She didn’t know what would happen tomorrow or the day after that or even five minutes from now.
