Moving in Harmony

A major change in soccer tactics has occurred in recent years. The lesson of major championships, especially in Europe, is that success lies in having a number of attacking players who can operate at high speed under intense pressure and in increasingly smaller spaces. Even the technical demands on back players are increasing, as is the need for goalkeepers to be able to transform defence swiftly into attack. Top clubs like Bayern Munich and Barcelona have led the way in releasing players from a rigid tactical formation. Players like Robben and Messi are free to break into any area of the field where they see productive space. The emphasis of play is now on speed, surprise, fluidity and interchangeability.

However, the key to tactical success remains the same—11 players moving in harmony in defence, in transition and in attack. So although coaches aim to make their players’ movement more flexible and creative, they must also coach the adjustment of those players not directly involved to retain the overall cohesion and harmony of the team.

The German National Team demonstrated the power of a team in harmony when winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Miroslav Klose, who became the World Cup’s all-time record goal scorer, described his team’s efficient and stylish performance as ‘super-blend’: ‘We are a unit, we super-blend in training and it shows on the pitch’ (Wilson 2014a, p S6).

A challenge of modern coaching is to create that disciplined mindset of freedom and adjustment, to synch the varied abilities of 11 players into an effective whole—a superblend!
