Flat 3, Crispin Court, Douglas, Isle of Man

Detective Sergeant Jenny Hays had arrived at Cubbon House at exactly nine o’clock. There were no outward signs of the copious amounts of alcohol she had consumed at the lovely little pub on the seafront the previous evening.

It had been an informative discussion between Jenny, Andy Wills and Rachel Moore. The time had been spent over a nice meal and a few drinks, looking out over the sea. The detectives from Nottingham had learned a great deal about Lillian Rhodes from the experienced Isle of Man detective.

As the evening had drawn to a close, DS Hays had promised to pick up Andy and Rachel at nine o’clock sharp so they could search the home address of Lillian Rhodes.

True to her word, she had arrived on time, and together they had made the short drive across town to the imposing grand residence that was Crispin Court.

Well, seventy-five years ago, it would have been grand, and it would have been imposing. It had been built at the turn of the century by a wealthy sea captain. The four-storey house looked out across the rooftops of Douglas, down towards the harbour. However, the once striking building now looked dilapidated, in a very poor state of repair, and was now a house of multi-occupancy. Each of its many rooms had been turned into a bedsit.

Jenny brought the CID car to a gentle stop. ‘I’ve arranged to meet the landlord here so he can let us into Lillian’s flat without causing any damage.’

Andy said, ‘What’s the landlord like?’

‘Jeff Barber’s sound. He owns a lot of the properties in Douglas that are rented by people on social benefit. His properties are also rented by a lot of our clientele, if you know what I mean. I try to maintain a good relationship with Jeff. He always keeps me informed where people are staying. I work with him as opposed to just smashing his flat doors down and arresting people. It works well. I get a lot of good intelligence from him, and he never asks for anything back.’

‘I wish some of our landlords were as cooperative.’

‘When I spoke to him last night about meeting us here this morning, he told me that he was planning to evict Lillian on her return. Apparently, she owes him six months’ rent. He told me that he had given her plenty of opportunities to pay the arrears, but she never had. He had no idea she’d gone to England.’

‘Did you tell him she was dead?’

‘No. I’ll let you make that call when you meet him. Personally, I don’t see any harm in telling him. I don’t think he would bump someone off over six months’ unpaid rent, but it’s your call, Andy. Here he is now.’

Jenny indicated a black Range Rover sport parked across the road.

Jeff Barber was in his sixties; a self-made millionaire, he still enjoyed remaining hands-on with his property empire. It made life worthwhile for him. It was his reason for getting out of bed.
