Leo set his plate on the table, went to the counter and turned off her TV. “I’ve had my fill of lions. How about some music?”

“No! No music!”

“I seem to remember you got pretty excited over ‘Wild Thing.’”

Which had led to a long night of lovemaking.

She remembered tossing him her red jersey top, remembered how he’d inhaled her scent while he’d watched her. The next memory that hit her was how she’d felt when she’d awakened the next morning with his long, lean body sprawled on top of her. She’d been naked, and her body had felt well-used. Her mouth had been bruised from too many kisses and sour with the taste of beer. She’d pushed him away, dressed and run. And she’d never wanted to look back.

But she had, first in her dreams, and then all the time this past week.

“Don’t get started on that night!”

“My lips are sealed.” He smiled as he sat down across from her at her tiny table. His thigh slid against hers. Funny, how mere denim against black silk could send a frisson of heat up her leg. She jumped back, bumping her knee into the table leg.

“Ouch!”

“Are you okay?” he asked.

Before she could stop him, he knelt to inspect her leg, running his hand beneath the silk and up her calf with unbearable tenderness.

“Good. You didn’t even break the skin.”

“I’m fine,” she muttered through gritted teeth, tugging her pants leg back down.

Smiling broadly, he returned to his seat. “You’re mighty jumpy.”

Who wouldn’t be with him so close? Even seated, he seemed huge. Dangerous. Was he bigger inside her kitchen? Or did the room just seem smaller and more intimate now that darkness pressed its velvet fingertips against the windowpanes and she knew they had the whole night ahead of them.

Slicing off a piece of steak, she tried to concentrate on chewing the tender meat. Impossible with his big muscular body so near…not to mention her memories.

He attempted polite conversation, but when she didn’t encourage him, he soon stopped talking. After that, there was only the clatter of forks against china and the beating of her heart. Once or twice they reached for bread at the same time, and their fingers accidentally brushed. Both times she felt a jolt and jumped again while he smiled as if he enjoyed her uneasiness immensely.

The night grew ever darker, and she became ever more intensely aware she was all alone with him in the privacy of her house. A house with bedrooms…and beds. She was as bad as he was. She couldn’t get near him without thinking about sex.

Oh, would this interminable meal never end? Would he never finish and get to what they had to discuss and leave?

Marry him? Eat with him every night like this? She would go mad!

He devoured his meal with more relish than she and was finished when she still had half her steak untouched. She wished he’d get up and go out on the porch or something so she could eat
