I left Anton with Bull, Pieter and Stan to have lunch while Red and I got our guns and then went for a walk. Our destination was the hotel where Leclerk was staying. Except we didnât get that far.
Red spotted his car immediately. It was parked up on the promenade where he would have a great view of the door to Stanâs hotel. I motioned Red to take the driverâs side and I went round to the other side. I opened the door and pressed the gun to Leclerkâs head.
âPut your hands on your head,â I said, getting into the passenger seat. Red took the back seat behind me. He pointed his gun at the back of Leclerkâs head. We had him covered from all angles. âDonât move a muscle, pilgrim. My friend has very itchy trigger fingers and Iâm not much different.â
âMy wallet,â Leclerk said in perfect English.
âWe donât want your wallet,â I said. âWe want to know why you have been following us.â
âInside left pocket in my jacket,â he said. âTake it out and look inside. That will explain everything.â
I switched the gun to my left hand and delved into his pocket with my right. I found the wallet and took it out. Then flipped it open.
âShit,â I said, risking my mouth being washed out with soapy water if Mrs Freeman ever got to know. âYou can relax, Red.â
I showed him the wallet with its badge inside.
âEuropol?â Red said. âWhat the hell is Europol?â
âYouâve heard of Interpol?â Leclerk said.
âCourse I have,â said Red. âWhat do you think I am? Some kind of savage?â
âEuropol is the European equivalent of Interpol. Weâre based in The Hague, but weâve got agents covering the whole of Europe.â
âYou better explain yourself,â I said.
âIâd like some answers from you first,â Leclerk said.
I looked at him and shook my head. âYou have two bad-tempered guys with guns sitting in your car. That doesnât give you much bargaining power.â
âThe badge is my bargaining power,â he said.
âFor the moment Iâm trying to forget the badge. Tell me your story. And it better be a good one or my gun goes to your head again. Why have you been following us?â
âCan I take my hands off my head?â
âFeel free,â I said.
âWhy donât we go inside and talk in comfort?â
âBecause I suspect thereâs someone I donât want to overhear your story. Drive to your hotel and weâll go in there.â
He drove slowly along the promenade and parked outside his hotel. We entered and a receptionist gave a cheery, âGood afternoon.â The hotel was similar to Stanâs except the owners had gone for pine instead of oak. It made the lounge look lighter and more contemporary, but lacked that warmth of old-fashioned charm. You pays your moneyâ¦.
Now that Leclerk was out of the car, I could get a good look at him. He was short and rotund, maybe in his fifties and wore large round glasses of a high prescription so that when he looked at you he resembled an owl peering out at the world wisely.
