For heâs a jolly good Charming!
For heâs a jolly good Charming!
Letâs give him a piece of pie!
Several forkfuls of charmberry-rhubarb pie later, Darling joined him at the incredibly long banquet table.
âCharityâs back with her family,â Darling whispered. âNo one noticed she was missing.â
âHow did you even get her out?â
âI picked the dungeon door lock and then forced the bars of her cell with a steel spear,â Darling said. âDonât tell anyone. Mother⦠wouldnât approve.â
âYou forced theâ¦â Dexter stared at his sister.
Darling darted her eyes around. âStop staring at me. Try to act normal.â
âThatâs just awesome,â Dexter said. âThatâs all. I mean, I always knew you were awesome, just not in so many different ways.â
âLetâs keep those extra ways between us, okay? Charity said sheâs going to pretend nothing happened, and Iâm good with that.â
âAll right,â Dexter said. âI just⦠you know, I defeated a changeling, which was my first real monster, and nobody knows.â
âI know,â Darling said.
âThatâs true,â Dexter said.
âAnd you did retrieve the Crochet Hook of Aunt Arachne. Everyone knows that.â
âBut Charity was the fearless one really,â Dexter said. âI guess I just wish⦠I wishâ¦â
He hesitated to say more. There were lots of things he wished, but wishes were often magic, and Prince Charming destinies were not ones of magic but of heroism. But if heâd been a wood-carver looking up at a star, or an orphaned Cinderella visiting her motherâs grave, heâd have wished to know his destiny and somehow feel prepared to face it.
Darling grabbed his hand and raised it over his head. âAll hail the fearless champion of the crochet hook!â she shouted.
A chorus of âHuzzah!â and âHear! Hear!â sounded around the room.
Dexter smiled and shrugged. âAll hail me,â he said.
