Twenty-one
Nick and I were huddled at a booth in the diner. Today the place was crowded. An older guy with a beer gut was eating scrambled eggs and pancakes at the counter, and a woman was feeding a toddler who sat in a booster seat at a table in the middle of the room. The two waitresses, Skye and Delores, were on shift to cover this bustling Monday afternoon.
I just finished telling him my theories, taking care to keep my voice low for fear someone might overhear. He stabbed the prongs of his fork into a slice of pumpkin pie, jerking his chin up slightly. I stopped speaking while Skye refilled our coffee cups.
She gave me a quizzical look. âDid you pay this guy to sit with you so you wouldnât look like a pathetic loner?â OâConnell snickered around a mouthful of pie, and I jabbed him with my spoon. âAt least this means I donât have to waste my time talking to you,â she quipped, an evil grin on her face.
âIâm sure your other customers will appreciate that. Run along now. This place is hoppinâ.â
She rolled her eyes. âNo one says hoppinâ. That went out with Richie Cunningham and poodle skirts.â
âArenât you too young for Happy Days?â
âAnd you arenât?â She raised a challenging eyebrow. âItâs called streaming. But then again, Iâm sure no one has ever asked you to Netflix and chill.â She eyed OâConnell for a moment, but he focused his attention on the pie. âWould you like another piece, mister? Maybe something on the side?â
He checked the time and glanced out the window. âIâll give the blueberry a try.â He looked at my lonely coffee mug. âYou feeling okay, Alex?â
âYeah, why?â
In a stage whisper, he said, âThey have pie.â I shook my head, and he dismissed the waitress. âHow long have you been coming here?â
âSince I started tailing Janet. It has the best view, even though the foodâs questionable and the waitress is difficult.â
OâConnell studied Skye for a long moment as she went to the counter and spoke to the man. Her black hair was tied in braided pigtails today. It made her face look a little rounder, or maybe it was just a trick of the heavy makeup. Today she wore silver and black eyeliner which made her unnaturally blue eyes pop, completing the effect with glossy black lipstick.
Delores returned to the kitchen with an empty plate she grabbed off a table. On her way back, she cut a slice of pie and brought it to OâConnell at Skyeâs request. Unlike her counterpart, Delores was a sweet, middle-aged woman who talked while she worked and tended to hum as she bused the tables. âHowâs the pie?â she inquired.
âExcellent,â OâConnell said, but I had a feeling he was lying to spare her feelings. âIâm surprised to find pumpkin on the menu. Isnât that a seasonal thing?â
âEveryone loves pumpkin pie.â She wiped down a nearby table and went back to the kitchen.
