“Icould really do without this shit,” I mutter to myself as I pull up to the parcel of land we’re donating to the town as a memorial park. It’s early. So the morning dew is still clinging to the grass. I step out, the chill of the morning cutting through my jacket. My breath fogs up in front of me and I stuff my hands deeper into my pockets, squinting as I look to where my brothers' trucks are already parked.

They're leaning against the beds of their trucks as they talk amongst themselves. I can tell from this distance that our eldest brother, Owen, is doing most of the talking. He always did have a knack for taking charge, for herding us younger ones like we were nothing more than wayward sheep. I shake my head, squaring my shoulders as I make my way toward them. The crunch of my boots on the gravel is the only sound that breaks the silence of the early morning.

"About time you showed up," Owen chides as soon as I get within earshot. His arms are folded across his chest, and his eyes have a hint of irritation in them.

"I had things to take care of," I say, meeting his gaze steadily. “Not all of us have the option of quittin’ peaches and stickin’ our heads in a vat of apple cider all day."

This causes a round of chuckles from our other brothers, to which Owen just rolls his eyes. "Got a lot of spunk this morning, don’t you?"

"I’ve got more than spunk," I retort. "I've got a daughter now."

It's been a few days since Talullah and Peach moved in, and while it's been a whirlwind of sleepless nights and endless diaper changes, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Waking up every morning knowing my daughter is just down the hall, seeing Talullah's sleepy smile as she sips her morning coffee... it's given me a sense of purpose I never knew I was missing.

But today, I have to focus on something else. Today, my brothers and I are installing a park bench in honor of our parents, a place where people can sit and enjoy the beauty of the land we all love so much. I have mixed emotions about it. But I understand how important this anniversary is, so I’m not about to let my personal feelings get in the way of what needs to be done.

"Wait. You have a daughter?" Fletch, the third oldest after Owen and Asher, practically chokes out his words. Asher and Justice stay silent, while the three brothers who haven’t met Peach yet look at me as though I just sprouted a second head.

“When did this even happen?” Colton asks.

“I found out a few days ago,” I reply, trying not to let my defenses get too high. I can accept that my brothers all think I’m irresponsible, but I won’t have them saying anything even slightly negative about my child or her mother. “Her name’s Peach and she’s about as cute as a button.
