In most instances, the spirits are already lining up to make themselves known before a client even arrives at my door. The most common reason for a spirit not to make contact is if the person died suddenly or violently and may not have completed the transition because he hasn’t yet come to terms with the fact that he or she is now dead. In those circumstances, I sometimes tell clients they have come too soon and invite them to return at a later date.

But, then, of course, the client sitting in my office, on the telephone, or in the audience at one of my events also has to be open and willing to hear what their loved one is telling them. And sometimes that can be the trickiest part of the three-way conversation. It isn’t that different from conversations we have with the living. If someone is trying to tell us something we don’t want to hear, they might as well be talking to the wall because we’re just not ready for the message to penetrate.
