Training that Counts
The mother of two young boys, just one year apart in age, purchased identical toys for both kids every Christmas. So greatly did she despise the conflict that personal gifts and variety introduced, that she neglected both her children’s individuality and social development. That is frightening.
For some theorists, parenting is a matter of facilitating a child’s natural and impulsive way, rather than actively directing the child’s ability to make right decisions benefiting others. Reactive in nature, this nondirective approach seeks to manipulate a child’s environment in hopes of making parental supervision non-adversarial. Yet, leadership by nature requires that you make decisions based on what is best and right, not what is perceived as most pleasing in the moment. The same holds true in parenting.
As a mom or dad, some of your simple decisions and instructions will be opposed by your child. So, what will you do? Sit back and wait for the child to “outgrow” the behavior, overwhelm the child with your might and will, or train the child in right patterns of conduct and habits of the heart? We trust for your child’s sake that it will be the latter.
There will be many times when your developing toddler will reject or strongly oppose your reasonable instructions. Usually, this is because he is not developmentally capable of understanding the reasonableness of your instructions. For example, all of a sudden a new behavior appears. Your fourteen-month-old is starting to stand-up in his highchair. You instruct him to sit down but he ignores your instructions. There are three influences at work here. First, the child’s misplaced confidence in his own abilities. Second, his inability to understand you have a vested interest in his safety and third, there are no such “all of a sudden” behaviors in toddlerhood.
