CHAPTER 6
As soon as my knot deflated, I wasted no time getting us up and moving again. The idea was to get Leo across town square and into the palace before the next flash struck him. Didnât matter how fast we moved, or that weâd just taken the edge off his heat, the people we came across could smell him. Their wide-eyed, over-the-shoulder stares confirmed it. Omegas were usually kept inside during their heat, for their own safety. Or maybe for ours.
Claimed omegas were off-limits, but that didnât always stop weaker-willed alphas from taking what they wanted with the defense of not being able to help themselves. Once some testosterone-loaded alpha had had his way with a heat-induced omega, the omegaâs alpha had to issue a challenge, which meant someone had to die. So for the sake of peace, omegas in heat got locked up. Alphas got to maintain their pride, and no one had to die.
Looking down at Leo, who clung to my arm with atypical fear, I could see he might not mind that custom right now, though heâd probably have had something to say about it if he werenât in heat. But the need made him vulnerable and weak and the object of too much attention as we wove between the vendors and shoppers and loiterers cluttering the square.
Too focused on my objectiveâthat gleaming stack of white marble stairs that led up to my motherâs doorwayâI didnât notice the man trying to get my attention until his hand came down on my arm.
âAngel.â My best friend Gillis huffed out his breath. âGreat Mother, you move fast. Thought living in the city would have made you soft.â
He poked at my belly as if to prove himself wrong. I managed to free myself from Leoâs grasp so I could shake his hand. Gillis looked to be a little softer himself. Heâd claimed a female omega right before everything blew up with Devin and appeared to be settling comfortably into domesticity. I wondered if he had a pack of kids by now.
âWhat brings you back?â he asked.
âI need to see my mother. Is she still ...?â I nodded my head at the palace, it having only just now occurred to me that in three years, a lot could have changed.
âYeah, sheâs still holding on to the title,â Gillis said. âItâs out of respect now, obviously. Anyone could defeat her. I wonder why your brother hasnât challenged.â
âI donât.â
It was the usual way when a head alpha lived past fighting primeâtheir heir would make a formal challenge, which would be acknowledged as lost without an actual fight, and then the new head alpha would take over.
âI suppose he doesnât want to pre-empt his mother,â Gillis surmised, âbut he leaves her open to a real challenge. Itâll be too late for your bloodline to retain the title then.â
I shrugged, knowing it was more likely laziness than respect that kept Devin from challenging. Being head alpha was a serious job, whereas being heir-presumptive was all the power with none of the work.
