Chapter Four

Robert

When Chad came downstairs the next morning for his doctor’s appointment, he looked tired. He fixed himself a cup of coffee and sat at the kitchen table while Sophia puttered around washing the breakfast dishes.

“Would you like some toast or an egg?” She addressed Chad.

He shook his head. “Just coffee, thank you.” He glanced over at me. ”You still want to come with me to the doctors?”

“Of course.”

His expression was blank. “Okay.”

“That’s still cool with you?”

“Sure.”

We sat in silence as he drank his coffee and when he’d finished, we went outside to my car.

I started the engine and headed down the long drive. “Feeling okay this morning?” I asked as I flicked on the CD player.

“I actually feel pretty good this morning. I’m tired, but then I’m always tired.” He adjusted the visor to keep the morning sun from his face. His phone was on his lap and when it buzzed he glanced down and then tucked it away in his pocket.

There was something about the way he put his phone away that just seemed odd. If it had been one of his employees texting him, I was sure he’d have responded.

“Anybody I know?” I asked.

“Hmmm?” He stared straight ahead.

“On your phone.”

He shrugged and didn’t really answer me. Something about the way he was avoiding the subject seemed off. He got texts from Sal all the time and he usually just shot off a quick message. But I could tell his energy was different right now.

I tried to make light of how secretive he seemed. “Is it your lover begging for a meet up?”

I expected him to laugh, but he didn’t. Instead he shrugged and continued to stare straight ahead. My pulse spiked nervously and I had to squash an annoying nudge of jealousy. We’d never really had a conversation about whether or not we would see other people during the pregnancy. It hadn’t even occurred to me to date anyone else, and I had assumed he’d feel the same. But maybe I’d been wrong.

“Why are you so quiet?” My voice was stiff.

He sighed and glanced over. “My ex has been texting me a lot lately. I’m not sure what to do about it.”

It was hard to ignore the territorial wave of anger that went through me. But I managed to speak calmly. “What does he want?”

“Scott’s one of those alphas who wants what he doesn’t have.”

I noticed he hadn’t said “couldn’t have” and that irked me. “How long ago did you split up?” If it was a while ago, I’d feel better. But more recent ex-boyfriends could potentially cause problems.

“It’s been about three months.”

Damn. Not as long ago as I’d have liked. “Why’d you break up?” I tried to keep my tone nonchalant. As if I couldn’t care less if he and his ex hooked-up. When in reality, the idea of Chad with some other guy had my gut churning.

He chuffed. “He didn’t really respect the constraints of a monogamous relationship.” He slid down lower in his seat. “Or to put it more simply; he liked to fuck other guys in our bed when I was at work.
