Epilogue

Sam Drake

(Five Years Later)

“Hurry up, we’re late as it is!”

My words were lost on my family. Edward smiled and slowed his pace to make a point.

“Really?”

My husband laughed before linking my arm.

“Can you believe him, Dally?” Edward laughed.

A lot can change in twelve hours, even more can change in five years.

Dally stayed strong for a few months. Shaved his hair tight and wore a new shirt every day, but the stresses of top-floor life were too much; you can lie on applications, but you can’t lie to the mirror.

He tried to quit, but Edward wasn’t hearing it; we needed a babysitter, and Dally had tons of experience.

“Edward Jr., you get back here right now!” Dally shouted as we entered Drake Tower.

Edward Jr. was born nine months after I lost my virginity. I know the week but not the day. I often wonder if Edward fucked his son into me on the first or second day we met; most days I realize it doesn’t matter.

Edward Jr. stopped at the front desk and ran his hand along the marble, his father looked to the security and smiled.

“What’s your name again?” Edward Drake, my husband, asked.

“You know my name.”

Edward turned to me and sniggered. He’s rarely in the office, not anymore, but he always plays the same game.

“John?”

The paunchy guard shook his head.

“Mike. Mike! Of course, how could I forget!”

Nope.

“It’s Tom. My name is Tom.”

“And what’s my name?” Edward asked. His shoulders tensed and his lip curled into a smile.

“Mr. Drake. Your name is Mr. Drake.” Tom replied.

Edward turned to me and smirked before looking back towards my now overweight and almost unrecognizable ex.

“That’s right, John, and don’t you forget it. You’re just lucky we outsource our security, otherwise your friends wouldn’t be able to get you work.”

“Yes, Mr. Drake.” Tom said through gritted teeth,

He didn’t look at me. He knew better. Last time he tried, and that was a few years back, Edward introduced his face to a door.

Edward glared at Tom until he heard our son’s voice.

“We’re late, daddy!” Edward Jr. shouted before sprinting towards the elevator.

Edward took my arm and we followed both our son and his babysitter.

“What time have you got?” I asked.

Edward glanced at his watch before holding up a couple of fingers.

“We’re either two hours or twenty minutes late.”

“You’re late, not me!”

“You know my motto,” Edward Drake replied, “Last one in the office, and first one out.”

The End.
