Chapter 6

There is nothing worse than the minute after Skye’s called down. All eyes are on him, of course. And he has to turn around and go down the stair ladder backwards. It’s so steep he feels like he’s going to fall forward if he goes the other way. So with a tight grip on the railing and that feeling like he’s an overgrown toddler, he goes to meet the brother of his mate.

It’s no small thing. Typically, the brother of the alpha would be important in the pack, though not having a direct rank associated with the connection. Everyone close to the alpha is a little extra important.

Skye keeps his eyes down the whole time. He feels a hotness in his cheeks, but it’s not overwhelming yet. He’s doing this. Even if he swallows and realizes his throat is bone dry. It’ll be impossible to speak.

Unsticks his tongue from the bottom of his mouth and works on rolling it in what little moisture there is.

Takes his place just behind Liam’s left arm, using him as a meat shield against the brother’s scrutiny, but he doesn’t get to hide for long.

“This is my brother, Jake,” Liam says formally, lifting that arm and using it to hook him forward. He gets pushed right front and center, feels like. Technically he’s still at Liam’s side.

“Hey.” Can’t look at him. It’s so awkward.

“Jake, this is Skye.”

Skye supposes he should have introduced himself. He hates feeling like a small, helpless child. Gritting his teeth against the humiliation, he straightens up and, as hard as it is, drags his eyes up to other wolf’s.

He wishes Liam had never called him out of the loft. But he’s Liam’s mate, the alpha’s mate, and if he’s weak, it reflects poorly on Liam. He holds that firmly in mind as he assumes a stiff and dominant posture, chin tilting up just slightly because the other wolf is tall.

Jake has all of Liam’s height, but none of his girth. He’s sturdy, but lean. Has the same strong jaw as Liam though, making him look like a natural born leader. Fuller lips. Same hair cut, cropped under the chin and pulled back.

“Nice to meet you,” Skye says formally and extends a hand. It’s a human gesture of friendliness, because there aren’t too many friendly wolf gestures upon meeting someone. Let’s be friends, typically starts out as, I probably won’t kill you if you don’t steal my things.

So his hand hangs there, but not for long. Skye knew he’d have to take it, here with his brother watching over them. Jake has thinner, weaker hands than his brother. When Skye squeezes, there’s no firmness. His shake is limp, submissive.

Despite his strong appearance and dark intelligent eyes, Jake isn’t a leader.

And Skye is. In a way.

“I’m Liam’s mate,” he says, with a hint of forced cheerfulness for overstating the obvious, but the burn in his cheeks is gone.

This is where I belong, he thinks directly at the wolf, never breaking eye contact. Liam’s arm is a snug weight around his waist, but he doesn’t lean on him.
