Chapter 6

The wolf wants out. Has wanted out since that highway with the tall trees. He’s been confined so long, he isn’t willing to wait for night, the safest time. Every flex of his muscles reminds him that this skin doesn’t fit. It feels almost like he’s been sitting too long and now must get up, stretch and move, except no amount of that will do the trick. He wants to run.

Skye reaches for the collar of his hoodie.

“You said the resort is empty? Are you sure?” He plays with his collar.

“Yeah. No one would find us out here anyways.”

So it should be safe.

There’s just one obstacle, kind of an embarrassing one. The change conditions his people not to give a damn about nudity, but Skye has always cared, a lot. He supposes if he’s going to give this mate thing a try, this should be the first thing they do.

“Do you want to show me around? Outside?”

Liam seems to have been brought out of his thoughts, blinking, staring blankly at him. His eyes are forest green, exactly like the trees out there. Skye likes the color.

“It’s been a long time for me. I used to go out of town sometimes, but not since it got real bad.” Long pause, thinking about those tense moments. “You know why.”

Liam gets a curious look on his face, nostril flaring. Figuring out what he’s not saying again, which means he’s about to be annoying.

“I’m fine,” Skye says, because something about the subtle frown on Liam’s lips makes him worried. “I’m just eager to run. When will we get to, tonight?”

The diversion works well enough, Liam tilting his gaze toward the windows instead.

“Don’t gotta wait for night. We can do it now.”

The wolf inside seems to worm inside this other skin. Skye has the sense of his ears perking forward with interest, though it’s impossible as a man. Another sensation of wanting to put his arms forward and bend his elbows in, make the human body conform to what he feels should be natural.

Liam looks relaxed, showing none of the pre-shift discomfort.

“Yes, please,” Skye says, pleading with his eyes too. His fingers are curling in to make paws, his thumb cocking underneath. He bumps his knuckles, something his mother taught him to do to blend in with people, should the urges arise in public.

“Alright. You gotta shed those clothes first though, ‘cause I ain’t buying another set. C’mon, let’s go down.”

Fair enough, Skye thinks, following him down the stair ladder. He knew this was coming. Packs always shift together and always naked. There’s just no way to do it with clothes on, and modesty is too much hassle. Some wolves like to flaunt their physique more than others, usually the ones with nothing to hide. Like Liam.

When Skye would shift with his pack, he’d always huddle in on himself, hanging on the fringes of the group, hiding sometimes behind bushes or bikes, and trying to make it seem coincidental so no one would call him out.
