THOR

“Goddamn it!” Selene held her phone up higher. “If I could get to the top of the mountain—”

“No.” I pushed farther into the woods and hitched my pack higher on my shoulders. “We need to keep going.”

I knew this was a trap from the beginning. They’d lured us up here, not caring which ones came, only that they had some leverage. They had my truck, which meant they knew who I was. It wouldn’t take them long to sort through her shit and figure out who she was, too.

I’d left my satellite phone in my primary bug-out bag, choosing the lighter one to watch Nikki since I figured we’d make our way back to my truck by nightfall. Regret punched me in the gut as Selene struggled with hers.

She ran her hands back through her hair, clenching big fistfuls while she led the way in front of me. She’d suggested stopping before sunset to make camp, and I was starting to agree with her. Basic survival said that if you were lost in the woods and you wanted to be found, stay put. If you were running from someone or something, keep moving. But it was going to drop below freezing tonight, and for the end of November in Buffalo, we were lucky there wasn’t already a foot of snow on the ground.

“We should look for firewood,” she said again, “and a place to sleep while we still have some daylight.”

I smirked and tried not to be insulted by my own words coming out of her mouth. I had trained her well.

Even then, it was only a matter of time before our luck ran out. Aris had promised to send reinforcements if I missed a check-in, but the Caputis were violent, impulsive idiots. We might not make it that long.

Selene climbed over a fallen tree and waited for me to do the same before walking again.

“We should make for the river,” she said, glancing down at her map again. “Follow that to hide our scent. Just in case they bring dogs.”

“Wet socks in freezing temperatures means frostbite.” We had our sleeping bags and the heater, but that would only get us so far. “Did you bring a change of clothes?”

“Hmm…We’re two miles from the road.” She shrugged. “We could head there and look for someone who lives local. Maybe we can steal a car to get us to town faster.”

“The Caputis are going to be trolling those streets, searching for us.” I shook my head. “It’s too risky.”

“So we’re just gonna wander through the woods after dark?”

I laughed despite our desperate circumstances. “Are you scared?”

She shot a biting glance over her shoulder. “No.”

“Then what’s the problem?” I raised an eyebrow and watched her ass through the camo pants. I shouldn’t have been eyeing her up like that, not when I was supposed to
