I hand-fed Neb the blackberry canes and spent some time brushing him before going back into the house. I helped Miss Dora bathe Honey and Dooley and then we washed up too. I read to the little girls so Miss Dora could take extra time to wash her hair.

Once we had put them to bed, Miss Dora asked, “Is Butch still in the barn?”

“I think he’s wandered off again,” I said.

She sighed, twisted the belt of her robe, and drifted out onto the porch. She called him a few times in a voice that didn’t sound too hopeful and then came back inside and went into her room.
