“Yes. I’ve been calling, and you didn’t answer. Are you all right? Where are you?”

“I didn’t expect to hear from you.” Damn, I can hear a quiver in my voice. I want to sound confident. I don’t want him to think there is any chance I will return.

“Why is that? Of course you would hear from me. I’m your husband. I have a right to know where you are. I am coming to pick you up and bring you home. You belong here; I need you.”

“I’m sorry, Brad, I am not coming back. You need to make other arrangements and don’t call me anymore.”

“I asked before, and I’m only going to ask one more time. Where are you? Elizz...”

I hang up and wish there was a slam app for a cell phone. Oh, my dear God, help me, I need Julie, and I need her now. The phone rings again, and I don’t answer. I know how he works, I have to calm down, I am confident he can’t track me. I still have an Arkansas area code. Even if he could, it wouldn’t be tonight, and then I begin to anger over his stealing my peace.

Even though it is late, I call Julie and get her voice mail. “Brad called, and I’m going to shut off the phone until morning.” The timing for her to be out with her husband is less than perfect. The receiver beeps and I click to answer.

“Julie, I didn’t even get a chance to shut off the phone, I was leaving you a message. Thank God you called. I’m sorry, I’m quite upset, and there is so much to tell you.”

“Lizard, calm down. Is it about Andrew? Is he OK?

“Yes – no, it isn’t all about Andrew. Brad called.”

“Don’t worry about Brad; he was going to talk to you at some point. What did he say?”

“He sounded so sad at first, then I could hear the undertone of anger in his voice. He probably had been drinking, and I know how the dance goes. He wanted to know where I am and wants to come for me. I just kept ignoring his questions about my location.”

“Good for you. What did you tell him?”

“Nothing, I hung up after only a couple moments. But he said he would find me.”

“Perfect, just keep hanging up. You know this isn’t a television show. You have a phone from Hot Springs, Arkansas, and you are in Nebraska. All he has is that number, and there is no permanent address. Even if you had an address, there are a thousand more places to hide.”

“I’m starting to feel better; you are right. I had used my home address in Kokomo to get the phone, so he doesn’t even have the hotel in Hot Springs, I've been several places since then, and I still don’t have a forwarding address.”

“Liz. Use my address if you need one, I will forward your mail wherever you are. I’m cool with that.”

Julie brought sense into my panic.
