FIGHTING AT NIGHT

WE LIVE ACCORDING TO AGREEMENTS, AND I HAD MADE one with a 220-pound brawler named Brick Chickisaw. It was typical behavior for me. After getting a taste of something good, I needed to gorge myself.

I’d seen him at the state fair up in the county, in Caribou. He bloodied a Biddeford man—knocking him out in two minutes thirty-three seconds—and afterwards, caught up in the excitement, I climbed through the ropes and approached him in the ring. His trainer, a short man with a gray ponytail, stepped in front of me. Brick was climbing off the other side of the canvas—his massive shoulders caught up in the ropes. I asked the trainer if they could come down to the coast for a fight in August.

“How much?” he asked.

“Five hundred,” I told him.

“You got girls?” he asked.

“I can make arrangements,” I said. We shook hands. “Point Allison, August second.”

“I’ll ask him,” he said. “Five hundred, even with girls … it’s not the greatest offer. We’ll see.”

“Eight-hundred,” I said.

“Who’s the fighter?” he asked.

I cocked my head to the side, then rolled my shoulders back. “Jason Chalmers.”

His eyes were black. “He’ll kill you, this guy. Did you see the fight?”

“I’ll give you even odds I knock your man out,” I said. “Any money, we’ll take the bet.”

“Sold.” He had a grin like a submarine sandwich, greasy and soft.

Alice would be pleased—she was my coach and financier. Brick hadn’t fought outside of Maine yet, but he was a pro fighter, the real thing—he hadn’t lost.
