My voice shakes as much as my knees. âMom? Is that really you?â
She gets up, flowing across the space and embraces me. Ronanâs grip releases me, so I can hug her back.
Like everything else here, she is drained of life energy, but still holds enough that she feels solid. A soft sob escapes from deep in my chest and pushes its way out of my mouth. We hold each other for long moments, my brain filled with questions and confusion.
âTime is running out, and I need you to do something for me,â she says in my ear, breaking the embrace and pulling back. A gentle hand brushes hair from my face and she smiles at me. âIâm sorry I had to bring you here to accomplish it,â
âYou?â
She nods. âWhen I realized Ronanâs connection to you, I was able to manipulate the ley line energy and use it to lift your spirit from your body.â
âMrs. Whitethorne,â Ronan says, extending his hand to shake hers. âItâs been a long time.â
âLook at the amazing man youâve grown into.â She pulls him into a hug. âThank you for taking care of my daughter. Your connection is incredibly strong.â
Ronan seems slightly abashed. âSheâs an amazing woman, and I think sheâs taking better care of me than I am of her.â He winks at me over her shoulder.
My mother was a powerful witch, so Iâm not sure I can comprehend the extent of what she could do. Can do. Itâs one of the reasons the demonâthe masterâwanted her for his own.
âHow did you bring us here?â I motion around. âWhere exactly are we?â
She studies my weak witchlight. âThis is a space around the pentagram where you and your sisters keep the master trapped. A mirror of the physical plane, existing between worlds.â
My insides go cold. âHeâs here?â
A head cock toward the woods. âOut there, yes. This cabin seems to be off limits to him. He canât go past the tree line.â
âHow do we get out of here?â Ronan asks.
âI canât, but you two can,â Mom answers. âAt least, I think you still can.â
Her earlier words ring in my head. âWhy is time running out?â
âThe end of a cycle is drawing near.â She holds onto my hands and keeps smiling, even though weâre discussing the incomprehensible. âOn the night of winter solstice, he plans to rise. Heâs been drawing energy through the ley lines, not only those on earth but heâs found a connection to the cosmos. Thereâs something I need you to do when you go back to your reality. Itâs very important.
âAnything,â I agree. âAutumn thinks sheâs found a way to contain him. Weâre just trying to work out the details of how to get him into it. Itâs sort of like thisâit exists outside of time and spaceâandââ
She interrupts me. âThereâs more to it than just containing him now. Since the night of my death, heâs been figuring out ways to re-write magick, trying to corrupt it in more and more dimensions. Things on
