Chapter Ten

HENRY

Henry could have sworn he didn't sleep long, but the sun was up and there were voices nearby when he stretched and yawned and came back to himself on the forest floor.

He couldn't remember the last time he'd slept so peacefully. There had been no relentless worries or restlessness, no nightmares or anxiety. Cocooned by the profound peacefulness of nature, and the presence of Jacob and Atticus, he'd had the best sleep he'd had in years. It was like he'd just been given something he'd stopped believing was possible, stopped even wishing for, except as a kind of jealousy towards other people's easy, blissful sleep.

But now it was morning, and Jacob's voice, though not close enough to hear exactly, sounded stressed. Who was he talking to, and why? Jacob always had such perfect command of the situation, anytime he had to deal with people, with anyone. Who could possibly fluster him?

Henry looked around for Atticus, so they could go find out together, but Atty wasn't here, either. With a groan, he rolled over and got up, brushing off his clothes a little. Rumpled, and he probably smelled like sex, but it would have to do. He couldn't even be worried about not looking his best, not this morning.

The profound inside quietness and rightness of last night hadn't left. If anything, it had sunk deeper, right down into his bones. It felt like it belonged there, like it was just a part of his life now.

It was a possibility as profound as a pole shift, and not something he could think about too hard right now. Jacob's voice was rising a little. Henry oriented himself towards that voice and headed downhill. He walked through the trees and joined Jacob, who was talking with two men who looked a lot like him. They caught sight of Henry and stopped talking before Jacob did.

"If I want more than one mate, it's my business!" he was saying heatedly. Then he turned and saw Henry, and a mixture of relief and worry mingled on his face, replacing the anger—yes, anger—that had been there.

"Hello, Jacob," said Henry, and nodded to the two men. His heart thumped painfully with the sudden reminder of nerves, but he kept his cool as best he could, sliding an arm around Jacob and saying, "Will you introduce me?"

Jacob's body was tense, almost rigid, but he relaxed subtly at Henry's touch. "Of course. This is Mark, my friend, and my cousin, Zeke."

The friend nodded at him, the other one stared, just taking his measure. "I hope we haven't caused any trouble," said Henry, in a measured, calm voice. "I know it's not quite usual, but Jacob is such a special fellow. We really love him, and we'll be very good to him." He turned and gave Jacob a kiss on the temple.

The friend's face was starting to turn red—not anger, but a blush, Henry thought. "I gotta—uh—check the—" Mark jerked a thumb back behind him and fled at something less than a run but more than a walk.
