HOPE

I woke up with a different perspective on life the next day. I knew the world wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine, but to me, it was a hell of a lot better than it had been. After an extra-long shower and a package delivery organized by Ronin, which I found held a pair of dark jeans, boots, a top and clean underwear – for which I was extremely grateful - Ronin took me to visit the crematorium garden where he’d scattered Bobby’s ashes and had a plaque placed, after having him cremated. I stood at the spot, and when the cold wind blew my now grown out hair into my face I didn’t move it. I just waited, closed my eyes and sent my thanks to a man who looked out for me when he didn’t have to, a man who never told his story and yet, I already knew it was horrific, for no family would let such a kind man disappear without searching forever for him.

“I’m ready,” I called to Ronin, who sat at a bench a few feet away. He gave me space to process, but Cola stayed by my side, as always.

“Where are we going?” I asked as Ronin drove us away from there.

“I was going to take you to my office, if that’s okay?”

I nodded, but said nothing more. My head was a little jumbled and I needed time to settle my thoughts.

When we arrived at the industrial area, I was wary and even more so when we pulled up outside the building that I had slept on the roof of more than once. My stomach churned when I looked at the building opposite. That was where Ronin had sold those girls. I stilled for a second, but then relaxed. I knew Ronin wasn’t going to hurt me. I trusted him.

“This building is mine,” he explained, as he pointed toward my home on many a night.

“I slept up there,” I told him.

“I know,” he answered and when my eyes widened, he continued, “I have sensors on the building, I knew someone was there, and after watching the footage back, I saw it was you.”

“You didn’t say anything,” I accused.

“No. I wanted you to have an escape and if I had mentioned it to you, you might have stopped using the space. I knew if you were up there, you were safe.”

“But you didn’t love me then,” I breathed out.

“I did.” His answer was so simple, like it told me everything and, in a way, it did. “Come on,” he exited the car like he hadn’t just blown my mind, but I followed dutifully, Cola at my side.

I was amazed as we entered his building. The outside was worn, not quite dilapidated, but not state of the art either. The inside however, wow, it was equipped with every modern gadget you could imagine. Sleek and streamlined, everything was there to serve a purpose, but at the same time it was clear no expense had been spared.
