CHAPTER 17

Novyy Tuvo

NRC Missile Control Site Dva

Major Natalia Verlinsky strode into the control bunker at the missile site and promptly ordered everyone to leave the room.

They were in one of the secure underground sections, but this room was being occupied by the quick reaction forces. The men and women rose and walked out without a word, leaving her with two of her senior aides responsible for passing on her orders as her forces were strung out over long distances.

She cursed that planet and its poor infrastructure. She couldn’t understand how a system with such a sophisticated defense sensor network could have such an appalling planetary communications array. Perhaps it was deliberate, she considered, perhaps her government didn’t want the workers sent out here to speak too much and engage in frivolous things such as social lives.

They were there to work, which was why the benefits were so good.

It went against their ideology, in a way. It appealed to capitalism and greed by making the remittance package so attractive, but the other way they had trialed before was less effective.

Verlinsky was no uneducated soldier, that much was widely known. She had obtained degrees in economics and history, and the socioeconomic history of her great nation was fascinating to her.

Part of that system had utilized the criminals in society and offered them reduced sentences to work on distant colonies such as the very one she was on at that moment. The reduced sentence incentive had attracted the lazy and desperate. Sending prisoners by force required additional soldiers to be sent as jailers, effectively running slave armies to grow their food, so productivity had fallen.

Only by adopting the American model, promising land and riches in the new worlds, had attracted those citizens with the drive and determination to work hard and succeed.

All that, in her opinion, still didn’t adequately explain why the few planets growing the vast majority of the NRC’s food in the outer sectors had such a poor communications network.

“Is there any progress on contact with sector command?” she asked, setting down the locked case on an empty table and sitting in front of it.

“Not yet, Comrade Major,” the lieutenant flanking her said peevishly. He hoped she wouldn’t press the issue; else he would be forced to admit that there had been no further update since she had last demanded to know if sector command were responding to them.

Verlinsky pursed her lips, refusing to allow others to witness her have an emotional outburst, no matter how small.

She wanted sector command to give her orders, because as much as she wanted to prove otherwise, the unexpected arrival of the hottest property in the galaxy had thrown her way out of her depth.

She wanted a more senior officer to be dispatched, to bring a division of soldiers and a fleet of ships in order to protect the substance, but above all else she wanted to be told what to do.

Her instinct, not that she knew it, was correct. She had isolated the substance and the research material.
