Sierra

She ran and ran. She had no idea where she was and where she was going – but she trusted the book under her arm, even if that sounded stupid. Who else did she have to rely on right now?

Ghost?

He was still diffuse, as if someone had taken the once concentrated sense of him and rolled him thin. He was around her, yes, but she could no longer feel him like she did before – as if he had a body, as if he had hands, as if he had a voice.

He was just… a hint of what he’d once been.

“Where is Ghost? The King in my mind?” she whispered when she realized she didn’t have to search for him on her own.

The book was still tucked under her arm, and just as she went to open it to get her answer, it shuddered. She felt some kind of energy leaking from the pages, until the next thing she knew, writing now appeared right in front of her. “It is unwise to open the book at this stage – we will switch communication methods so that you do not stumble in the dark.”

If that had been a possibility earlier, the book should have already told her. Sierra didn’t dare reprimand it. She waited, her heart in her mouth.

“The Library of Kings is filled with the memories and experiences of the time of Kings – and that amount of concentrated energy makes it hard for even the most accomplished dream shaman to summon her bonded in this place.”

“So he’ll be back?” she asked breathlessly, only just pushing her words out, appreciating that she didn’t need to scream them out for the book under her arm to hear them, if it did, in fact, hear and didn’t somehow pick up on her thoughts remotely.

“If we can flee this place, then yes. Though we must remove ourselves from the Shrine of Kings completely for you to be able to summon him in full.”

There was a lot the book had just revealed – like the fact this entire place was a shrine, and the fact she apparently summoned Ghost.

That wasn’t what her mind locked onto. It was one word. If. The book didn’t say when we fled – just if. Which meant, even it, with its apparently insurmountable knowledge, doubted she could get out of here.

That thought did something to her, undermining her balance, and she staggered to the side.

Before she could fall down harshly on her wrist, the book shifted in her grip, and she fell onto that, instead, ensuring she didn’t break a bone.

She jerked her head to the side just as luminescent green writing appeared in front of her face. “Get up. An assassin is close behind.”

She jerked to her feet, her fingers so sweaty, she momentarily dropped the book.

She wrenched to the side, grabbed it up, and spun, throwing herself forward once more.

“You must prepare yourself to fight. They’re close.”

Her heart exploded in her chest, pounding harder than it ever had in her already tumultuous life.
