When Cleopatra was around twelve years old, in 58 BC, her father, Ptolemy XII, angered the citizens of Alexandria and faced a possible attempted coup. As a consequence, he fled to Rome for safety to gain support. We are unsure if the young Cleopatra followed her father to Rome at this stage or not. Cleopatra’s sister, Berenice, seized the throne in her father’s absence. Cleopatra’s father remained in exile for three years before returning with an armed Roman force. Whether Cleopatra accompanied her father or not, this tumultuous period would have had a huge impact on her life as Cleopatra witnessed events that would mirror her own future – the forced deposition of a King, the rise of a young queen and ultimately, the need for support from Rome to ensure the security of one’s position.
