Bunting would explain how the grave had once been the centerpiece of an annual celebration by a group known as the Camphene Club of Philadelphia, which was Captain Carhart’s hometown. Many members of the club belonged to the Philadelphia police force, and they held their annual convention in Ocean City. After the business of the two-day meeting was completed, the club members got down to some serious celebrating. Eschewing the pleasures of the boardwalk and the beach, the members of the Camphene Club climbed into small boats and sailed across the bay to West Ocean City. Once on the mainland, the club band would strike up a tune as a small parade of conventioneers and some local residents made its way to the solitary grave of William Carhart, the English sea captain. At the grave site near the marshy shore of the bay, the club members would break open bottles of beer and drink a toast to Captain Carhart. While the band played a mournful dirge, the Camphene Club would celebrate until the supply of drink was exhausted. None of the Ocean City residents who accompanied the revelries of the Camphene Club ever explained why the club staged this unusual celebration. With his story concluded, Captain Bunting swung the Princeton around and headed home.
