Leadership

Objective

To show that the kind of leadership we give is very important.

Materials Needed

Twelve flat toothpicks, string, and a rubber band.

Procedure

Take the toothpicks and gather them together in a bunch. Do not tie them. Discuss what could be done to help the toothpicks stand up.

Explain that the tooth picks are like a group that needs leadership. This leadership could be offered in three ways:

The careless leader. Tie four toothpicks together very loosely, and try to stand them up. Explain that this leader does not follow up and give encouragement. Consequently, this leader’s group will fall down on projects or assignments.

The strict leader. Tie four toothpicks together very tightly. Tie them tightly enough that the toothpicks crack or break. Explain that this leader uses pressure, criticism, or sarcasm to ensure success as a leader.

The flexible leader. Wrap four toothpicks with a rubber band. Explain that this type of leader encourages and follows through on assignments but never binds tightly. This leader is good at give-and-take and considers the needs of the group.
