Anatomical Directional Terms

Anterior (ventral) – Toward the front of the body. Example: The anterior deltoid is anterior to (in front of) the medial deltoid.

Posterior (dorsal) – Toward the back of the body. Example: The posterior tibial artery is posterior to (runs behind) the tibia and carries blood to the back of the lower leg and foot.

Superior - Toward the top of the head. Example: The eyes are superior to (closer to the top of the head than) the nose.

Inferior – Toward the feet. Example: The ankle is inferior to (closer to the feet than) the knee.

Medial – Closer to the midline (mid-sagittal plane) of the body. Example: The medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee is medial to (closer to the midline than) the lateral collateral ligament.

Lateral – Farther from the midline (mid-sagittal plane of the body). The lateral malleolus of the ankle is lateral to (further from the midline of the body than) the medial malleolus.

Proximal – Closer to the trunk or point of origin. Often used in relation to limbs, nerves, and vasculature. Example: The elbow is proximal to (closer to the shoulder than) the wrist.

Distal – Farther from the trunk or point of origin. Often used in relation to limbs, nerves, and vasculature. Example: The ankle is distal to (farther from the hip than) the knee.

Superficial – Closer to the surface. Example: The epidermis (outer layer of skin) is superficial to (closer to the surface than) the dermis.

Deep – Farther from the surface. Example: The muscles are deep to (farther from the surface than) the skin.
