Run under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, the Au Pair Program enables citizens of other countries between 18 and 26 years of age to live with host families in exchange for providing limited child-care services for up to 12 months. An au pair's working hours are limited to 10 hours per day and 45 hours per week. An au pair cannot be placed with a family having an infant less than three months old unless a parent or other responsible adult stays home. Au pairs placed in homes with children under two years of age must have at least 200 hours of experience caring for infants.
